About
Gökçeada
Location
Gökçeada is Turkey's largest island located in the Aegean Sea. It covers an
area of 289.5 km2 with a 95 km long coast. It's 29.5 km from the east to
west and it is 13 km from the north to south.
Gökçeada is 31 miles away from the province of Çanakkale, 14 miles away from
Kabatepe Sea Port in Gelibolu, and 33 miles away from Bozcaada.
History
In history, a great amount of attention was paid on Gökçeada because of its
important location as the gate of the province of Çanakkale. As a result, the
island was under controls of many countries. Gökçeada could not develop and
people suffered due to the different rules of various nations. People who lived
with the pressure requested Fatih Sultan Mehmet, a king of Ottoman Empire who
conquered İstanbul, for his protect.
Economy
People in Gökçeada are mainly involved in agriculture, fishery, trade, tourism
and government services. Major portions of the cultivable land are used for
farming proposes. Most of the farm grown products are those that are compatible
to the Mediterranean climate such as olives, grapes, sunflowers and cereals.
Sports
Gökçeada is appropriate for many sport activities because of its geographical
reasons. The options are wind surfing, scuba diving, snorkel, swimming, cross-country,
tracking and hunting.
Transport
Two ferry boats run twice a day from Kabatepe Sea Port, Çanakkale to Gökçeada.
The service is more frequent during summer when the touristic season opens.
